GREEN ACRES

Eddie Albert plays a New York City attorney turning in his city life to live as a gentleman farmer in the bizarre town of Hooterville. Eva Gabor played his glamorous wife, constantly begging to return to New York. The 1965 series followed other fish out of water shows like “The Beverly Hillbillies”, and was based on a radio program called “Granby’s Green Acres.” The show started as a normal 60’s sitcom, but evolved into a surreal and satiric show, with Oliver Wendell Douglas (Albert) surrounded by characters that could have inhabited Alice’s Wonderland. In fact, it was Lisa (Gabor) who fits in better than Oliver to the strange life stream of Hooterville. The show made it through 6 seasons and 170 episodes, but despite its popularity (it rated 34 out of 96 shows in 1970-71) it was cancelled during the “Rural Purge” of 1971 when all shows with a country theme were cancelled.
